3 Hot Drinks That Will Keep You Warm During Nairobi's 'Winter'

This post will contain Game of Thrones references and some spoilers, proceed with caution.

Judging from the latest Game of Thrones episode, which, by the way has left me SHOOOOK, winter came and went but, back here, in Nairobarry, the cold season is around the corner and we're going to be freezing our toes off very soon. It's a known fact that there is no better antidote for cold weather than really hot, hot chocolate in a big mug. So I'm plugging you with quick, easy and bomb AF hot chocolate recipes that you can make at home when the going gets tough and it's too cold to get out of the house and buy yourself one of those nice lattes from Artcaffe.

These drinks are known to be highly addictive, you have been warned.

For all the recipes, do not preheat the sufuria because the ingredients will not be able to brew properly- like the milk will get hot before the chocolate melts. Use medium to low heat.

Now to the good stuff...

Coconut Rum Hot Chocolate

1. Coconut Rum Hot Chocolate

  • 1 and 3 quarter cups of whole milk

  • 3 quarter cups of white chocolate

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 1 shot of coconut rum (Optional)

  1. Whisk the whole milk, cinnamon and white chocolate together in a sufuria, over medium heat until it's hot and smooth.

  2. Add the coconut rum and leave it on low heat for 30 seconds; then serve.

This recipe serves 2.

This has to be my favourite hot drink so far- like in my life. The coconut rum BAAANGS!! Obviously it isn't enough to get you drunk but the flavour it lives in the hot chocolate is unmatched. This drink will live you feeling relaxed so I'd suggest that you take it when you've come home from a long day of obligations.

You can top this drink with marshmallows, whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon.

Spiked Nutella Hot Chocolate

2. Spiked Nutella Hot Chocolate

  • 1 and a half cups of whole milk.

  • A third cup of Nutella.

  • 1 cinnamon stick.

  • Half a cup of coconut rum.

  1. Whisk the whole milk, nutella and cinnamon stick together in a sufuria, over medium heat until it's hot and smooth.

  2. When the mixture is ready, add the coconut rum and leave it for 30 seconds over low heat, then serve.

This recipe serves 2.

If they gave this drink to the Night King, trust me, he'd have called off the war a long time ago. This is the most comforting hot chocolate there is. One sip, and all your troubles are forgotten- or maybe this is the rum talking 😂 Anywaaaay, this is a good morning drink- it will give you the high spirits you need to conquer the day.

You can top this drink with whipped cream, melted nutella and marshmallows. I added the cinnamon sticks because I thought it would make the photo look cute.

Red Wine Hot Chocolate

3. Red Wine Hot Chocolate

  • Half a cup of dark chocolate.

  • 2 teaspoons of drinking chocolate.

  • 3 teaspoons of brown sugar.

  • A quarter teaspoon of cinnamon.

  • 4 cups of whole milk

  • A pinch of salt.

  • Half cup of fruity red wine eg. Merlot

  1. Whisk the dark chocolate, drinking chocolate, brown sugar, milk and cinnamon together in the sufuria until hot and smooth. After about 5 minutes stir in the salt.

  2. Remove from heat and add the wine. Stir and serve.

This recipe serves 4.

I imagine this would be the drink Tyrion and Cersei Lannister would enjoy if Winter actually came to Westeros. Already wine and chocolate go well together, now imagine drinking them together; ugh pure bliss 😍

Make sure you share these drinks with a loved one, everything tastes better when it's shared. Also if you make these recipes, please make sure you take a picture and tag me on Instagram (@__tarara) I would love to see how they turned out for you.
